Australian Senate Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill

The Jurist addresses the decision to approve the bill after a nationwide postal survey resulted in a 61% in favor for same-sex marriage. The Marriage Act of 1961 will be altered to include same-sex marriages.

The bill will make sure religious freedoms are still respected and those that carry out marriages will have the right to refuse performing same-sex marriages.

Attorney General George Brandis, states that “Australia will no longer be insulting gay people by saying: different rules apply to you”. The passing of this bill marks a significant social reform movement in Australian history.
