UK Sees Largest Increase in Divorce Petitions in 15 Years

New statistics show that divorce petitions in the UK skyrocketed to the highest number in 15 years, totaling 118,141 divorce petitions filed in 2018 alone.

According to Ministry of Justice figures, divorce petitions rose by 8% since 2017 or around 8,000 new petitions.

Despite the largest increase in petitions since 2003, the number of actual divorces that were completed through the courts fell below 100,000 for the first time since 1971.

Some are speculating that the higher divorce petitions but lower actual break-ups are due to a backlog in divorce petitions being processed in 2017 due to problems associated with the modernization of computer systems.

Since 2003, which charted a record high number of divorce petitions filed at 172,357, divorce petitions have steadily been falling in the UK.

The jump in 2018’s divorce petitions could signal a┬áreversal of the current trend.
