A group of 13 abandoned and starving Great Danes were adopted by the King Rama X of Thailand.
The dogs were initially rescued by animal rights activists from Watchdog Thailand and the Pathum Thani Livestock Development Office’s Animal Welfare Division.
The Great Danes had been left to starve to death by the owner of the puppy mill after she shut down the breeding operation while going through a divorce and financial troubles.
The woman in question will face animal cruelty charges for leaving the dogs in their cages to die.
She stated that she planned to raise and sell the dogs for a profit but things didn’t go as planned.
Watchdog Thailand shared photos of the emaciated dogs on Facebook, which subsequently drew massive outrage from online viewers.
King Rama X also paid for the costs associated with treating the dogs and nursing them back to health.
The dogs will now live at the Department of Livestock Development’s dog care center.
The first animal welfare legislation was signed into Thailand law in 2014, which gives basic rights and protections to pets, animals for work, livestock, performance animals, and any other animals regardless of if they have an owner or not.
