Thai Authorities Bust Illegal Surrogacy Ring, 22 Arrested So Far

The Thai police have arrested 22 people suspected of operating an illegal surrogacy ring in the Kingdom, expect more arrests to follow.

Four of the individuals arrested so far have been identified as doctors working at state-run medical facilities in Thailand.

According to police, the mastermind of the operation still remains at-large.

The transnational commercial surrogacy operation allegedly found and paid Thai women to undergo artificial insemination so they can carry babies for infertile couples in China.

The police state that they have seized around one billion baht worth of assets from the commercial surrogacy gang.

The Thai and Chinese nationals who participated in the surrogacy ring will now face charges of human trafficking and breaking surrogacy law.

Under Thai surrogacy laws, surrogacy is only permitted when a surrogate mother is related to one of the individuals seeking a surrogate mother to carry their child.

Thai authorities state that the commercial surrogacy ring has been active since 2012 and has recruited over 100 surrogate mothers.

A previous successful raid against the surrogacy organization occurred in February.
