The Philippines House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would legalize divorce in the country.

As of now, the Philippines is the last country in the world to outlaw divorces under any circumstance, with the only other exception being the Vatican City.

The new legislation would make it legal to separate from a spouse for a variety of reasons, including abandonment, adultery, domestic abuse, and irreconcilable differences.

Although the majority of both major parties in the House and Senate favor the new stance on divorce, it might have trouble being codified into law since both the Senate majority leader and President Rodrigo Duterte have opposed the idea in the past.

One recent survey showed that 53% of Filipinos support legalizing divorce but the country still remains heavily Roman Catholic. On top of that, the Catholic Church still has a lot of sway in the country.
