Owners that Eat Pet Pig Spark Animal Rights Law Amendments

A Vietnamese potbelly pig in BC, Canada, was nursed back to health by the SPCA and successfully adopted. It was only less than a month did its new owners kill and eat it.

The incident had sparked a controversy online and shows that the animal protection law that were written more than 50 years ago, no longer reflect the values held against animals these days. The owners had apologized on social media, as they had technically not broken any laws. As long as the pig was killed “humanely” it is not illegal.

An animal rights lawyer has called for tougher laws in concern for the protection of animals after this case. Another animal justice executive agrees in that animals such as cats and dogs are viewed as “family members”.
