Former King of Malaysia¬†Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan divorced his wife recently by saying the word “talaq” three times.

“Triple talaq” as it is commonly known, is a practice in traditional Islam that allows a man to instantly divorce his wife without going through legal proceedings by simply uttering the word three times.

The sultan had married Rihana Oksana Petra, a Russian beauty model, just six months prior to the talaq divorce.

The split was officially recognized in Singapore after the monarch said “talaq” three times in front of Oksana and two Muslim witnesses, in accordance with Islamic law.

In many countries consisting of Muslim populations, family issues are often left to Islamic courts to handle rather than typical judicial courts.

In Thailand’s Muslim dominant southern border regions with Malaysia, for instance, Thai family law gives significant autonomy to Sharia courts to decide cases such as divorce and marriage based on Islamic law.

In the past, this has led to huge controversies taking place in Thailand’s south such as child marriages.

Over time though, most countries have banned triple talaq marriages.
