Colorado’s first gay divorce was finalized this week. This is an important landmark for gay and lesbian couples who were married in other states but reside in Colorado.

The civil union law which was introduced introduced in May 2013, treats same-sex marriages performed outside of the state just as it would a heterosexual couple’s marriage. The law requires that new residents must wait 90 days before filing for divorce. Only one of the spouses is required to be a resident.
