Hoda Muthana, an American-born woman who left her home in Alabama to become an ISIS-bride, filed a federal lawsuit recently in order to be able to return to the US.

The lawsuit, filed by the woman’s father, argues that the 24-year-old who was born in Hackensack, New Jersey is an American citizen by birthright.

Muthana and her 18-month old child are currently living in a Syrian refugee camp after fleeing the Islamic State.

According to Muthana’s lawyers, she knows what she did was wrong and is willing and ready to accept all responsibility¬†for her actions and expects to serve jail time but just wants the best for her child.

The Trump administration has maintained though, as the Obama administration did before it, that Muthana is not a US citizen because her father was a Yemeni diplomat when she was born.

According to US immigration lawyer Joe Leeds, any person born in the US to an active foreign diplomat does not immediately qualify for citizenship by birth.

But Muthana and her father both claim that she was quickly able to receive a valid US passport before departing to Syria to join ISIS.
