Nebraska Passes Law Protecting the Disabled in Custody Battles

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts recently signed a bill protecting the rights of disabled people in custody cases.

The legislation makes it illegal for courts to deny legal custody of children to a parent on the basis of a disability.

“When deciding which parent should have custody of a child, the disability of a parent should not be used against him or her in court,” said Ricketts. “Custody decisions should be based on the best interests of the child, and this bill helps accomplish that objective.”

On top of that, the bill also makes it against the law for courts to value one sex over another while making custody rulings.
