Leprosy No Longer Grounds for Divorce in India

The Indian cabinet has given the green light to an amendment that would remove leprosy as a legitimate ground for divorce.

Indian divorce law still equates people suffering from leprosy, a curable condition nowadays, to lunacy. And under the Indian Divorce Act, that is enough legal reason to call for a divorce.

The law is a remnant of longstanding discrimination against lepers in India.

In recent years though, the Indian government has taken strides to fight discrimination against leprosy-afflicted individuals, including repealing the Lepers Act of 1898 as well as giving them special privileges that could help uplift them in society.
